We have been hearing a lot lately about how sitting is the new smoking. However, just because standing more is healthy too much can be a bad thing. Standing for too long can come with many different negative affects when proper precautions aren’t taken. In a recent study done researchers found that standing five hours a day contributes to increased heat disease risk, and significant fatigue in your lower limbs. Including being a cause for long term low back pain, musculoskeletal disorders, aching hip joints, and knee problems. So what are some precautions you can take if you find yourself standing a lot throughout the day? Below are a few of the top tips to help.
Good Footwear
It is important to avoid footwear that doesn’t include support, this includes high-heels, flip-flops, sandals, unsupportive flats, and more. Flip flops, and other shoes can be comfortable for lounging around but when standing for long periods can wreak havoc on your low back. When shopping for a shoe make sure it is wide enough for your foot, provides arch support, and also is cushioned. Posture
Posture can have a huge benefit on your legs, low back, and your upper back. If working at a standing desk make sure your knees are slightly bent, not locked out, and your monitor is in a position in which you do not have to hunch over, or constantly look down at as this can cause issues with your neck.
Walk Around
Circulation can be an issue, if you remain standing without any movement for a prolonged period of time. It is wise to from time to time shift weight from one leg to the other, and also take breaks walking around.
Stretching and Occasional Sitting Breaks
If standing all day for your job, sitting breaks can give your body, and muscles much needed rest. For your lunch hour, and during breaks it is wise to sit down.. Stretching also is very helpful and crucial to promoting and improving circulation, and reducing muscle fatigue. Try stretching throughout the day. Two great stretches to try is to one at a time pull one leg behind you to stretch your quadriceps. For your hamstrings lock your knees and then slowly bend at the hip over until you full stretching in your hamstrings, and low back.
